The great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 caused a tsunami to strike the Cornish coast causing a great amount of damage to the whole sea side area and the sea rose ten feet in ten minutes at Newlyn.

In 2014, the indie band "Hit Parade" released the album "Cornish Pop Songs" which contains several songs about Newlyn including "Rainy Day in Newlyn" and "The Ghost of the Fishing Fleet".
