On a clear day you can see the East pier and the East and West light houses mounted on the harbour walls.
The RNLI is a charity that saves lives at sea and we all owe a debt of gratitude to its brave volunteers.
There has been a lifeboat station at Whitby since way back in 1802. The RNLI have been responsible for the station since 1861. In the 200 plus year history of the Whitby lifeboat station, there have been five different lifeboat stations here.
The very first lifeboat that was stationed at Whitby was during 1802 and on the west side of the river. The station was paid for by a combination of local finance plus an offer from Lloyd's of London contributing £50 of the £160 needed to pay for a lifeboat during those days.
