According to official archeological finds, it is pretty sure there was a settlement in Thirsk around 500–600 BC
In the past, most of Thirsk was granted to mr. Robert from Montbray for whose descendant House of Mowbray and the vale of Mowbray was named.
In the year 1767, an act of Parliament was passed to commence the building of a navigable waterway to the town from the River Swale along Cod Beck. However when the project ran out of funds construction stopped soo it was never completed, although remains can be seen of the wharf and a lock near Lock Bridge.
