Get a webcam like this for your own websiteThis live Birnbeck Pier webcam pans and zooms to show different views of the Pier and the buildings on Birnbeck Island in Weston Super Mare. Although badly in need of restoration you can still see examples of the Victorian building techniques which have lasted through the years and helped to make restoration of this great old landmark still possible. Birnbeck Regeneration Trust are working tirelessly towards its full restoration.
The pier was opened on 5th June 1867 and the day was then declared as a public holiday in the town of Weston Super Mare.
The sounds of church bells ringing, cannon salutes firing and fireworks were heard all over the town on this great opening day, and although Birnbeck Island did not originally have a lot in the way of amusements and things to do, over the next 22 years things were much improved and amenities including refreshment rooms, a large concert hall, reading rooms, an extended pavilion, low-water jetty and lifeboat station were all added to the island.
Birnbeck Island and Pier has a lot of interesting history too. For example During World War 2, the pier was taken over by the Admiralty and commissioned as HMS Birnbeck. It then became a secret facility for the testing of weapons. Serious damage was caused to Birnbeck island when a Wellington Bomber, operating out of nearby RAF Locking, released a dummy mine in error whilst flying overhead.
