This area has been wooded since the end of the Last Glacial Period and now Sherwood Forest is a National Nature Reserve. Sherwood Forest is very old and When the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, the forest covered an area a quarter of the size of Nottinghamshire.
In 1066 during in the invasion of England, William the Conqueror made Sherwood Forest a Royal Hunting Forest and later it becam popular with King John - who we have all heard of in the tales of Robin Hood.
