What Different IK Ratings Mean

The "IK" rating or code is an international standard which standardises and defines the level of resistance of enclosures provided for electronic equipment to mechanical impacts and this rating can be an important factor when choosing an outdoor camera or webcam which may be fitted in an area which could be subject to attempted vandalism or other impact. To check on equipments protection against the ingress of dust or moisture you should also check the equipments IP rating too.

The IK code is made up of the letters "IK" to ensure the correct identification of the code in use, followed by a two digit number. This number denotes the impact size the item is protected against (measured in joules) and this is followed by an example of what could generate such an impact.

So the list below shows IK Code, Impact Size Protected against (joules), followed by the description.

IK00    - - -    No protection against any mechanical impact
IK01    0.15   Protected against a 200 g object dropped from 7.5 cm in height
IK02    0.2     Protected against a 200 g object dropped from 10 cm in height
