Historical information about this webcam

The Lancaster Canal winds around Garstang in Lancashire for over 17 miles towards the north from Preston and south of Lancaster.

The Lancaster Canal leaves Preston heading west in a large loop before taking its northerly course.

Lancaster Canal is the longest stretch of lock-free canal in the country, and this makes it a popular destination for beginners or experienced canal boaters.
The Lancaster canal is one of the most scenic in the country and stretches all the way from Preston to Tewitfield, bypassing the Forest of Bowland and the Wyre countryside. First opened in 1826, the Lancaster canal was nicknamed the “Black and White Canal’ because it was used to carry coal from the north and limestone from the south.
