Polperro harbour has a long and intersting history. Smuggling prospered in the 12th century and part of the south west coast path was used by Revenue Officers on the look out for smugglers.
For centuries the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port and Polperro pilchards were exported to many parts of Europe. Although not as prominent now, fisihing is still a large part of everyday life in Polperro and approximately twelve commercial fishing vessels still operate from the harbour.
Tourism became Polperro's main industry during the 20th century and there are boat trips from the harbour to view the coastline which can offer sightings of dolphins and seals and there are several restaurants and seven pubs located in the village.
