Penzance is the most westerly major town in Cornwall and has beem granted various royal charters from 1512 onwards. On 1 November 1755 the Lisbon earthquake caused a tsunami to strike the Cornish coast, and at around 2.00pm, the sea rose eight feet in Penzance.
Large sections of Penzance are classified as conservation areas and are subject to special planning laws. This includes most of the core of the town and the historic harbour areas of Newlyn and Mousehole too.
