St. Ives Bay Webcam 1 From the National Coastwatch Institue
The NCI station at St. Ives bay is situated on the north side of the town
on an exposed headland with virtually uninterrupted views across the St
Ives Bay. This is an ideal location for a coast watch post.
The building is on Lamp Rock which got its name from there having been
a tall pole, fitted with a lantern, many years ago which was an aid to
local seamen, sailing at night into Porthgwidden Cove.
From here NCI crews keep an ever vigilant watch over the sea.
In 1638 the site was fortified with up to 15 guns at one point and granite
walls were erected in 1860 to to protect against a possible French
invasion.
